Editorial Reviews
Creatively, Cassandra Wilson has never rested on her laurels, and her new album, ANOTHER COUNTRY, is no exception to the rule. Nine of the ten songs are composed by Ms. Wilson and/or her collaborating partner, guitarist-producer Fabrizio Sotti, with the tenth a very special arrangement by the duo of the classic aria, "O Sole Mio." Recorded in Florence, Italy, the entire sound of the album is intimate, guitar driven, and lushly romantic.

Edit: I cant stress enough what all the musicians bring to the table on this recording. Cassandra always surrounds herself with only the finest but this particular ensamble is really something quite special. Fabrizio Sotti is a name I will never forget. I had never heard of him before this album and Color me impressed. He was meant to perform with Cassandra. He is the true definition of a master at his craft.
I would consider this music more of a rootsy Americana kind of thing. Very fine songs (all but two written or co-written by Wilson). Very fine guitar work by Sotti on electric guitar, and what sounds to my ear like both nylon and steel strung acouistic guitars.
Kudos to Sotti also on creating a very nice sound scape additionally with the general production. Use of accordian, multiple percussionists are used to effectively support Wilson's incredible voice/phrasing while never being overly busy or "in the way."
Congratulations to Wilson on her fine recording and new label.
Ms. Wilson is primarily accompanied by acoustic guitar, accordion, fretless bass, and percussion. The ample Brazilian and Latin influences conjure the atmosphere of some colorful and slightly mysterious land. It's a lovely place to visit, but I wanted to see more of the scenery. There isn't enough variety in the songs, and while the sound is tasteful overall, it leans a little too close to pillowy lite jazz at times. Wilson's delivery is elegant, understated, sometimes sultry, but I wanted more passion.
Along with the vocal songs, the album features a couple of quite lovely guitar instrumentals.
I could see myself listening to a couple of songs from this while lounging around on the weekend, but the full album just doesn't hold my attention all the way through.
